Radiant heating at home: what it is like

Radiant heating warms people and surfaces directly instead of blowing warm air around. Here is what that means at home, and what affects how comfortable a room feels.

How it differs from warm air

Warm-air heaters heat the air, which then warms the room. Radiant heating works the other way: a warm ceiling, floor or panel gives off heat that warms the people, floors and furniture it reaches.

Living with it

  • Hidden or visible. Ceiling film and floor heating are hidden once the room is finished; panels are a visible part of the room.
  • Quiet. The electric radiant systems CBS supplies have no fans.
  • Space. Built-in systems leave walls and floors free for furniture, apart from areas planned around fixed cabinetry.

What affects comfort

How comfortable a room feels depends on the system chosen, the specified output, the room's insulation and construction, and the controls. Ron takes these into account when he specifies a system.

Which system?

For a new or replaced ceiling, see ceiling carbon film. For floors, see film under timber or carpet or cable under tiles. For visible heaters, see glass and marble wall heaters.
